The Valley is 260 square miles of businesses that have almost nothing in common with each other except a pallet under the product. A scenic shop on Lankershim Boulevard, a satellite parts supplier off Nordhoff Street and a trucking terminal on Tuxford Street all search the same phrase, and each one would be badly served by the other two orders.

Prop houses, set construction shops and equipment rental companies along Lankershim Boulevard and Vanowen Street move gear to stages all over Los Angeles on staging pallets: lighting cases, cable, flats, rigging. The right product here is the plain one. Our standard 48x40 block pallets take a forklift or pallet jack from any side, hold about 2,500 lbs on the move, and fit any liftgate truck a rental house sends. Shoot schedules compress without warning, so this buyer does best keeping a small buffer on hand; same-day delivery is possible when there is none, at a small premium.

Crates for Set Pieces That Do Not Fit a Pallet

Scenic pieces, oversized props and camera packages are the loads that break a standard pallet, and for those we build custom crate boxes at the yard. A crate closes the piece in on six sides, and the details are chosen per item: closed-cell foam for fragile surfaces, wood blocking and bracing so nothing shifts, a screwed lid if the crate will travel again and a nailed lid if it will not. Standard crates take 3 to 5 business days; foam, bracing or heat treated lumber for a piece going abroad pushes that to 5 to 10. Custom Dimensions and Reinforced Builds

The industrial parks along Nordhoff Street, Canoga Avenue and De Soto Avenue produce satellite components, precision assemblies and defense hardware that arrive at our yard as a drawing, not a pallet size. We build custom size pallets to that drawing: any footprint from 12x12 up, heavier deck boards, extra blocks or hardwood when the part is heavy, a flush deck when the base has to be flat. There is no strict minimum, so the sensible first order is one prototype that your own line and your own forklift can test before the quantity is released. Plain dimensions come off the line in 3 to 5 business days; add reinforcement or heat treatment and plan on 7 to 10, with rush work possible on request. Heat Treated for Parts Going Abroad

The aviation maintenance and aerospace parts suppliers around Van Nuys Airport, and the Chatsworth shops shipping to overseas partners, need heat treated ISPM-15 pallets for anything leaving the country, whether it flies out of LAX or sails out of the ports. The wood is held at 56C at its core for 30 continuous minutes, and each pallet is marked with the IPPC wheat symbol, the US country code and the HT treatment code. Before the purchase order goes out, check three lines:

• Destination. Assume ISPM-15 is enforced unless verified otherwise for that country.
• Everything wooden in the box. Untreated dunnage or bracing added to a stamped pallet can flag the whole shipment.
• Custom plus HT. Heat treatment is available on every custom size; allow the longer 7-to-10-day window.

Two Routes Into the Valley and What They Mean for Timing

Our yard is in Florence, on the south side of Los Angeles, and there are two ways from there into the Valley. The I-5 and the 170 Freeway serve the east side: Sun Valley, North Hollywood, Burbank and up to Sylmar. The 118 and the 405 serve the west side: Chatsworth and Canoga Park. A truck loaded for Tuxford Street is not the truck that reaches De Soto Avenue, which is why an east-Valley and a west-Valley order placed on the same morning are not always delivered on the same run.

One habit follows from that: say which side of the Valley you are on when you call, and give receiving hours. East-side stock orders ride the routes we already run several times a week and same-week delivery is common; west-side orders travel the 118 and the 405 instead, so give us your receiving hours when you call and we will confirm the delivery day.
