EPAL or 48x40 HT? How Los Angeles Exporters Decide on Euro Pallets

By Maynor Martinez, Bro Pallets LLC  |  Published October 5, 2026

We stock EPAL Euro pallets for sale in Los Angeles: 800x1200mm, heat treated at manufacture and carrying the ISPM-15 HT stamp. You need them when the European receiver's racking, trucks or contract are built around that footprint. When they are not, a heat treated 48x40 usually clears customs just as well and fills an American trailer better.

The search for Euro pallets for sale almost never starts with the pallet. It starts with a line in an email from a receiver in Rotterdam, Hamburg or Barcelona: please ship on Euro pallets. The Los Angeles shipper reading it runs a 48x40 operation, has never stocked an 800x1200 pallet, and now has to decide whether to comply, push back, or do something in between.

All three answers can be right. Which one applies depends on four things about the receiver and the route, none of which are about the pallet itself.

The Request That Starts the Search

Take a specialty food producer in Vernon that has just landed a distributor in the Netherlands. The first order is a partial container. The distributor's warehouse runs automated racking and a truck fleet built around the European standard, and their purchasing template says EPAL. The producer's floor, forklifts and every other customer are built around the 48x40.

The instinct is to treat the request as a compliance matter, like the ISPM-15 stamp. It is not. No regulation requires a Euro pallet; what Europe requires is that wood packaging be treated. The Euro pallet is a footprint standard, and the receiver is asking for it because their side of the supply chain is sized to it. That distinction is what makes the decision negotiable, and it is why the questions below matter more than the specification.

Euro Pallet vs 48x40: The Figures That Matter for Your Load

The table above carries the full comparison; before any order for Euro pallets for sale is placed, three rows drive the decision. The EUR pallet dimensions are the obvious one: 800x1200mm against 1219x1016mm means the EPAL is narrower and slightly shorter, so a case pattern designed for a 48x40 will overhang or leave gaps when it is moved across. Case dimensions, not the pallet, should be checked first.

The second row is tare. An EPAL weighs around 55 lbs against 33 to 48 lbs for a 48x40, and on air freight or a weight-limited ocean booking that difference is paid for on every pallet. Our piece on what each pallet type weighs empty works through how tare feeds into freight cost.

The third is capacity, and it runs the other way. The EPAL is rated to about 3,307 lbs dynamic and 12,125 lbs static, well above the roughly 2,500 lbs dynamic limit of a 48x40 block pallet, because it is built to a single enforced specification: 78 nails, 11 boards, 9 blocks, audited manufacturers. For a heavy, dense product that alone can justify it. For a light product it buys nothing.

Four Questions That Decide the Order

Does the Receiver's Racking or Contract Specify 800x1200?

Ask directly. European warehouses, automated storage and retrieval systems and truck loading plans are commonly designed around the 800x1200 footprint, and a pallet that does not fit the rack gets re-palletized at the door, at your cost and with a second round of handling damage. If the receiver's contract or receiving spec names EPAL, the answer is yes and the rest of this section is moot. If the request is a habit rather than a requirement, keep reading.

Will the Goods Travel on European Trucks?

A European truck is about 2,400mm wide inside, which is why three Euro pallets sit across it; an American trailer is 96 inches, sized for two 48x40s. If your cargo is delivered container-to-warehouse and stays there, truck fit does not matter. If it moves on by road across the continent, a 48x40 wastes width on every leg. Inland distribution after arrival: yes. Door delivery to a single site: usually no.

Will You Ever Get the Pallets Back?

In Europe the EPAL operates inside an exchange pool: the receiver hands back an equal number of pallets to the shipper, which is what keeps the cost of a premium pallet tolerable. A shipper in Los Angeles is outside that pool. The pallet leaves with the product and does not come back, so the EPAL should be priced as a one-way packaging cost, not as an asset. If the receiver will credit you for the pallets or take ownership of them in the price, the premium is easier to absorb. If not, that premium is a line on every shipment. This is the question first-time exporters tend to skip.

Is Everything Else on the Pallet Treated?

Every genuine EPAL pallet arrives heat treated, with the ISPM-15 HT mark alongside the EPAL and EUR stamps, so the pallet itself is compliant the day it leaves our yard. That does not cover the load. Untreated dunnage, blocking or bracing added around a compliant pallet can flag the entire container, exactly as it would on a stamped 48x40. If the answer here is no, fix the dunnage before choosing a pallet; the choice of footprint will not save the shipment. The mechanics of the stamp are in our ISPM-15 guide.

Splitting an Order: EPAL for Europe, 48x40 for Everyone Else

Los Angeles exporters looking for Euro pallets for sale usually need them for a share of their output, not all of it. The practical setup is a split order: the European volume on EPAL, everything domestic and trans-Pacific on 48x40 block pallets, ordered as heat treated ISPM-15 pallets only where the destination requires it. Keep the two stocks apart on the floor, label the EPAL lane so a forklift driver on a Friday afternoon does not grab the wrong stack for a domestic truck, and build the European case pattern once so it is not re-solved on every order.

Where a heavy or fragile European load needs more than a platform, the same split applies to crating: the piece can ride in one of our custom crate boxes built on an EPAL-sized base, with heat treated lumber throughout.

Euro Pallets for Sale in Los Angeles: Stock, Lead Time and Cost Position

EPAL pallets in Los Angeles sit in stock at the 1160 E 78th Street yard, just south of Vernon; call for current availability, since export orders come in waves. Every unit carries the EPAL and EUR marks and the ISPM-15 HT stamp from manufacture, so heat treated Euro pallets are the only kind we stock and there is no treatment step or certification to wait for on our side. From 100 pallets the delivery is free across our service area and below that the fee scales with the distance from the yard; we run delivery to the Long Beach port area straight down the I-710, and a port order that leaves the yard in the morning is normally at the terminal gate the same day.

On cost, be realistic. Euro pallets are priced higher than American pallets because of the licensed manufacturing, the audited quality control and the built-in heat treatment. Volume brings the unit price down, a steady export account gets better terms than a one-off shipment, and the number we quote, in English or Spanish, is the number that lands on the invoice. How the pallet fits into the rest of a container booking, from staging to gate-in, is covered in shipping pallets from the Port of LA.

Four questions, one email back to the receiver, and the order for Euro pallets for sale in Los Angeles is either confirmed or replaced with a heat treated 48x40. Either way, the pallet stops being the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Euro pallets required to ship to Europe?

No regulation requires them. What Europe requires is ISPM-15 treatment on wood packaging. Euro pallets are a footprint standard that European racking, trucks and the exchange pool are built around, so receivers often ask for them by contract.

Do EPAL pallets need a separate heat treatment?

No. Every genuine EPAL pallet is heat treated and carries the ISPM-15 HT stamp from manufacture, alongside the EPAL and EUR marks.

Can I use Euro pallets for my domestic US shipments too?

You can, but at 800x1200mm they do not fill a 96-inch American trailer two across the way 48x40 pallets do. Most operations keep EPAL for the European share and 48x40 for everything else.

Do you have Euro pallets in stock in Los Angeles?

Yes, we keep Euro pallets for sale at our Florence district yard on East 78th Street. Call for current availability; bulk orders get the best per-unit pricing and deliveries of 100 pallets or more are free.
